Beijing: In a shocking development that has rocked the Chinese badminton community, 27-year-old World No. 5 men’s doubles star from China, He Jiting may be on the verge of being expelled from the Chinese national team after being accused of infidelity, gambling, and making offensive remarks about teammates and coaches.
The controversy erupted after He’s ex-girlfriend leaked private conversations, which allegedly reveal his involvement in multiple romantic entanglements, including receiving a Rolex watch from a wealthy female fan. He reportedly admitted to preferring relationships that could “benefit” him, openly expressing interest in being with someone financially supportive.
The leaks also included explicit conversations and disturbing claims—among them, He allegedly stated he had intimate encounters “8 or 9 or 10 times,” showed affection for multiple women while still in a relationship, and used the same phone case for different partners.
More troubling are his crude insults aimed at both teammates and officials. He reportedly called his men’s doubles partner Ren Xiang Yu derogatory names, vented frustrations about being accidentally injured during training, and referred to Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) president Zhang Jun with offensive slurs by calling Zhang “Fatty Zhang”. He also complained about the team’s pairing decisions, behavior that violates national team rules on discipline and respect.
Adding fuel to the fire, He allegedly mentioned losing over 2,000 yuan gambling, despite China’s strict zero-tolerance policy on gambling for athletes. According to the Athlete Conduct Code set by China’s General Administration of Sport, players involved in activities such as gambling, drug use, or behavior that disrupts team unity face immediate dismissal.
This isn’t He Jiting’s first brush with controversy. In 2022, he was suspended for three months (suspended sentence) by the BWF for match-fixing allegations at the Fuzhou China Open and stripped of prize money. Now, with his explosive language and unethical conduct made public, even supportive team officials may find it impossible to defend him—especially since he allegedly insulted many of them directly.
Screenshots of his chats show He frequently using vulgarities, turning profanity into a form of punctuation. While some may see this as a personal habit, many fans and netizens have expressed disappointment, saying a world champion and public figure should maintain higher standards both on and off the court.
He Jiting was once seen as a key figure in the resurgence of China’s men’s doubles. He helped the team win the 2021 Sudirman Cup, 2024 Thomas Cup, and earned silver at the 2021 World Championships. But with the scandal continuing to escalate, his future with Team China looks increasingly uncertain—and a return seems highly unlikely.
