Copenhagen – Danish badminton star and Olympic gold medalist Viktor Axelsen has confirmed he has successfully undergone a minimally invasive back surgery to address the long-standing spinal disc issue that has plagued him in recent months.
In an interview with Denmark’s TV 2 Sport, Axelsen expressed relief and gratitude that the procedure in Germany went exactly as planned. “The surgeons removed the disc herniation that was pressing on the nerve. It was a minimal procedure, and everything went very well,” he shared.

“There’s been some work done on my back, so I have to take it slow,”
– Viktor Axelsen said to TV 2 Sport.
Axelsen thanked the medical team involved, including surgeons, doctors, and nurses, saying he felt fortunate to be in such skilled hands.
Time Away from Badminton
With his recovery just beginning, Axelsen has already withdrawn from two major events:
European Championships in Horsens (April)
Sudirman Cup (Mixed Team World Championships) later this month.
For now, there’s no set return date, as the 30-year-old is focused on taking things week by week. “The first few weeks will be very quiet. I need to fully recover from the operation,” said Axelsen, who will return to his base in Dubai for rehabilitation.
His rehab program will take place at the NAS Sports Complex, under continued consultation with his medical team from Budolfi Privathospital in Aalborg and the German surgeon who performed the operation.
Looking Ahead
Axelsen’s next possible comeback targets include the Indonesia Open (June), Japan Open (starting July 15), and the China Open (late July) — all major BWF Super 1000 tournaments on the badminton calendar.
His return will depend entirely on his recovery progress and medical clearance, but fans and the badminton community worldwide are already eagerly awaiting his return to the court.
For now, Viktor Axelsen remains committed to making a full recovery:
“I believe I’ll return stronger. I still feel there’s so much left for me to achieve in badminton.”
