Three local players have qualified for the OFSAA badminton championship after placing in the top two at the SWOSSAA senior championship Wednesday in Leamington.
McGregor’s Maddux Beuckelare lost to Windsor Assumption’s Shikai Jin in the boys’ singles final.
Chatham-Kent’s Jesica Lin and Curtis Moco lost to Windsor Massey’s Zach Bai and Summer Lu in the mixed doubles final.
No other local players placed in the top four.
Joey Zou, of Windsor Ste-Cecile, won girls singles, Massey’s Tarun Govindarajan and Samuel Yu won boys’ doubles, and Massey’s Alice Chen and Alice Li won girls’ doubles.
Massey collected 33 points to run away with the team title. Runner-up Assumption had 10. Chatham-Kent and McGregor tied for fifth with five apiece.

The OFSAA championship will be May 1-3 in the Halton Region.
De Santis gets RBI in Canada’s win
Chatham’s Gino De Santis had an RBI sacrifice fly in the Canadian junior baseball team’s 6-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays’ extended spring squad Thursday in Dunedin, Fla.
De Santis also drew a walk in three plate appearances in the final game of the juniors’ extended spring training camp.
Canada finished with a 3-5 record playing against the Fort Lauderdale Stars and the extended spring squads of the Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies.
The national junior team will reconvene for the Dominican pro tour May 13-21.
Pettipiece nets two in Telus Cup win
Merlin’s Chase Pettipiece scored two goals, including an empty-netter, in the Elgin-Middlesex Canucks’ 3-1 win over the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds at the Telus Cup national U18 men’s club hockey championship Thursday in Chilliwack, B.C.

Port Lambton’s Brock Lane made 33 saves Wednesday in the Canucks’ 6-2 loss to the Regina Pat Canadians.
The Canucks were third with a 2-2 record going into Friday’s round-robin finale. The top four teams go to the semifinals Saturday.
Smiths fuel Cards in win over Patriotes
Konnor Smith and Kurtis Smith each scored twice in the Lambton-Kent Cardinals’ 6-1 win over the Pain Court Patriotes in the LKSSAA senior boys’ soccer league Thursday.
At Dresden, Caden Evans and Mark Simmons also scored for the Cardinals (2-1-0).
Gregory Ansell replied for the Patriotes (0-3-0).
At Chatham-Kent, Oshane Campbell, Keaton Copeland and Austin Waggott scored for the Golden Hawks (4-0-0) in a 3-1 win over McGregor. Miguel Lopez tallied for the Panthers (0-4-0).
At Forest, Tilbury (3-1-0) grabbed the A division lead with a 3-2 win over North Lambton (2-1-0).
At Wallaceburg, the Tartans (0-4-0) lost 5-0 to Northern (4-0-0).
Allado scores three in Hawks’ victory
Lily Allado’s hat trick led the Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks (4-0-0) to an 8-0 win over the McGregor Panthers (0-4-0) in the LKSSAA senior girls’ soccer league Thursday.
Pain Court and Lambton-Kent tied 0-0, Wallaceburg lost to Northern 8-0, St. Patrick’s beat Great Lakes 6-0 and Tilbury lost to North Lambton 2-0.
