Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian badminton icon Lee Chong Wei has urged Malaysian national players under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to deliver strong results before requesting higher salaries.
Speaking at the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) Hari Raya Open House at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil on Monday, Lee emphasized the importance of performance as a benchmark before players start making financial demands.
“I’m not saying players can’t ask for a higher salary — they can. But they must first prove themselves through results that benefit the association,” said the three-time Olympic silver medalist.
Sponsorship Support for High Performers
Lee Chong Wei believes that BAM would be open to negotiating better pay for athletes who consistently deliver strong performances on the international stage.
“If a player delivers and asks for a raise, I believe the association would be willing to help, perhaps through sponsorship support,” he explained.
However, he expressed concern over a growing trend among some players who, despite lacking consistent results, are still requesting significant pay hikes.
“Some players haven’t reached that level yet but are already demanding higher salaries. When they don’t get what they want, they immediately want to go independent. That’s not how it should work.”
Call for BAM to Review Salary Structure
With BAM set to undergo organizational restructuring soon, Lee Chong Wei hopes the new leadership will re-evaluate the player compensation system and implement reforms that support both performance and athlete welfare.
“We hope that once the new structure and leadership are in place, BAM will introduce meaningful changes. They should focus on providing top-class facilities, support services, and comprehensive athlete development programs,” he said.
