Jakarta – Indonesian men’s singles ace Jonatan Christie has declared his readiness to play in all group stage matches at the Sudirman Cup 2025, which will take place from April 27 to May 4 at Fenghuang Gymnasium, Xiamen, China.
Despite his willingness, Jonatan Christie made it clear that the final call rests with the coaching staff.
“If I’m chosen to play every match, I’m ready,” Christie told reporters at the PBSI National Training Center in Cipayung.
“But in a team event like this, many things must be considered — such as athlete readiness, head-to-head records, and the specific opponents.”
Team Strategy Comes First
Christie emphasized that team tournaments demand different strategies compared to individual events.
“You have to look at the overall line-up. Who is better suited to open the tie? Who’s best for specific opponents? It’s never just about one player,” he said.
A Leader On and Off Court
Now 26, Christie is expected to lead the men’s singles charge in the absence of Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, who is recovering from injury.
According to PBSI head coach Indra Wijaya, Christie remains the primary anchor in a squad that also includes emerging names like Alwi Farhan and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah.
“Jojo is still our spearhead in men’s singles, but we’re also bringing young players to expose them to a big-stage atmosphere like the Sudirman Cup,” said Indra.
“This tournament isn’t just about results — it’s a vital part of our regeneration process.”
From Rookie to Role Model
Christie recalled his own Sudirman Cup debut back in 2015 when, at just 17, he represented Indonesia with no senior role models beside him. That experience, he says, shaped his career — and he now aims to provide that same guidance to Alwi and Zaki.
“I learned a lot back then — being thrown into a big tournament as a teenager. So now, I want to help the next generation,” he said.
Christie stressed that young players should focus more on the process than the outcome.
“It’s not always about winning right away. It’s about learning how to handle the team environment, the pressure, and the team routines. Even just watching and supporting from the bench is part of the experience.”
Indonesia’s Group D Challenge
Indonesia has been drawn into Group D at the Sudirman Cup 2025, alongside Denmark, India, and England — three teams known for their strength in the men’s singles department.
While Christie will likely be Indonesia’s go-to shuttler in the group stage, he welcomes the opportunity to both compete and mentor.
“I’m preparing physically and mentally, whether I’m playing all matches or not,” he said.
“If the coaches pick me, I’ll be ready. If not, I’ll still be there to support the team.”
