After taking the opening set confidently, Sze Fei and Izzuddin showed signs of inconsistency in the second, allowing the world No. 28 pair to level the match. But the newly crowned world No. 1 duo quickly regrouped in the decider to clinch the victory with authority.
Next, they face a formidable test against home favorites Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s top women’s doubles duo, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, needed three sets to dispatch Indonesian pair Lanny Tria Mayasari and Siti Fadia Ramadhanti, winning 18-21, 21-16, 21-17 in 56 minutes. It marked their second straight win over the Indonesians this year and avenged a loss at the Malaysia Open in January.
In the men’s doubles, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun continued their dominance over compatriots Wan Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King, winning 14-21, 21-11, 21-15. This win extended their head-to-head record to 4-0.
Malaysia’s top mixed doubles team Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei also progressed smoothly, defeating Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch 21-9, 21-12 in just 31 minutes. They now face eighth-ranked Danes Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund in their first-ever meeting.
On the men’s singles side, Lee Cheuk Yiu stunned home favorite Jonatan Christie to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in years. The Hong Kong shuttler praised his composure amid a roaring crowd, stating, “I’m proud I could stay focused and beat a home player here.”
With Alwi Farhan also bowing out against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, Indonesia is now without a representative in the men’s singles. Antonsen admitted to feeling frustrated over not closing the match in straight sets but credited Farhan for his fight.
“He’s a talented, creative young player. Definitely one for the future,” Antonsen said.
The quarterfinal matchups promise high-octane action, including a marquee clash between Shi Yu Qi and Wang Zheng Xing in the top half of the draw.
