Paris – Malaysia celebrated its 68th Independence Day with pride and joy as Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei etched their names into badminton history, winning the 2025 Badminton World Championships mixed doubles gold medal — the country’s second-ever world title.
The world No. 4 duo delivered a clinical and dominant performance to defeat China’s No. 2 seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin in straight games 21-15, 21-14 in just 40 minutes at the Adidas Arena in Paris.

The Malaysian pair’s aggressive style, with sharp cross-court setups from Toh and powerful smashes by Chen, overwhelmed their Chinese opponents. Their high-speed strategy paid off as they maintained pressure throughout, forcing repeated unforced errors from the Chinese side.

In the second set, despite trailing 0-2 early, Chen and Toh quickly regrouped and took control. Tang Jie’s emotional self-motivation — seen slapping his own cheek after a simple mistake — symbolized their intense desire to deliver the win.
Their historic triumph marks Malaysia’s first-ever mixed doubles world title, following the men’s doubles victory by Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik in 2022. Malaysia is now firmly back among the elite in world badminton.
🥈 Silver for Pearly/Thinaah in Women’s Doubles
Malaysia nearly had two world champions on the same day, but Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah had to settle for silver after falling short against China’s World No. 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning in a thrilling final: 14-21, 22-20, 17-21.
Despite putting up a heroic fight and winning the second set, Pearly/Thinaah couldn’t maintain momentum in the decider. Nevertheless, the silver marks Malaysia’s best-ever performance in women’s doubles at the World Championships and a proud moment for the nation.
👑 Women’s Singles Recap: Yamaguchi Dominates Final
Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, already a two-time world champion (2021, 2022), added a third crown by defeating Chen Yufei of China in a lopsided final 21-9, 21-13. Chen, who may have sustained an injury during her semifinal match against An Se Young, struggled with rhythm and footwork, allowing Yamaguchi to dominate the court.
