Kuala Lumpur – Malaysian mixed doubles shuttler Chen Tang Jie is ready to step into a new chapter of his badminton career, expressing a strong desire to become a versatile doubles specialist—with South Korea’s Seo Seung Jae as his role model.
The 27-year-old, who recently parted ways with former mixed partner Toh Ee Wei, is preparing to compete in both mixed and men’s doubles events, with his immediate focus on the upcoming Taipei Open (May 6–11) and Thailand Open (May 13–18).
At both tournaments, Chen Tang Jie will be partnering with Chen Wen Tse, a 19-year-old rising talent.
“I’ve always admired Seo Seung Jae. He’s brilliant in both men’s and mixed doubles. I’m nowhere near his level yet, but one day, I hope to become a player like him,” said Chen Tang Jie at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).
From Inspiration to Action
Chen Tang Jie shared that his motivation for competing in men’s doubles stems from a desire to grow and evolve as an athlete.
“I personally asked the coaches for a chance to play in both disciplines. I still see myself as a rookie in men’s doubles, not a senior. I just want to improve and not burden my partner,” he added.
Despite his seniority, Chen Tang Jie emphasized there would be no hierarchy in his new partnership with Chen Wen Tse.
“I told Wen Tse that we must approach this as equals—no senior or junior labels. What matters is the chemistry and mutual support. Even though our future as a pair is uncertain, I’m taking this opportunity seriously.”
A New Start After the Split
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) recently announced the split of Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, one of the country’s top mixed doubles pairs. The decision came following recommendations from the BAM Performance Committee, after recent performances and compatibility issues between the pair.
