Changzhou – South Korea’s World No. 1 An Se Young was forced to withdraw during the semifinals of the 2025 China Open, a Super 1000 event, due to a lingering knee injury—ending her chance to complete a historic clean sweep of all Super 1000 titles this season.
Facing China’s Han Yue in the semifinals, An Se Young dropped the first game 19-21 after surrendering a 10-6 lead. Despite briefly fighting back to reach 17-14 and then 19-18, Han Yue clawed her way ahead to close the set.
In the second game, the match was tied at 6-6 before Han surged ahead with five consecutive points. Trailing 6-11 at the mid-game interval, An Se Young decided to retire from the match, handing Han Yue a spot in the final.

An Se Young had previously claimed titles at the Malaysia Open, All England Open, and Indonesia Open—all Super 1000 tournaments—this season. A win at the China Open would have made her the first player ever to win all four Super 1000 events in a single year.
Despite entering the tournament with a pre-existing right knee injury, the Korean star fought valiantly up to the semifinals. She had dominated previous matchups against Han Yue with an 8-1 career head-to-head record, making the withdrawal even more heartbreaking.
The women’s singles final will now be an all-Chinese affair between Han Yue and Wang Zhi Yi.
