PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik impressed at the Malaysian Masters, advancing to the quarter-finals with a convincing win over Liu Kuang-heng and Yang Po-han on Thursday (May 22).
Aaron and Wooi Yik secured a 21-13, 21-16 victory in just 39 minutes in the second round.
Joining them in the quarter-finals is world No. 2 pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who will face compatriots Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun tomorrow.
Second seeds Sze Fei and Izzuddin defeated Taiwanese duo Chen Zhi-ray and Lin Yu-chieh 21-19, 21-13 in 30 minutes.
Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun also booked their quarter-final spot with a straight-sets victory over Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Kyohei Yamashita, winning 21-17, 21-13.
It was a disappointing outing for Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong, who bowed out after losing to top seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skarrup Rasmussen 9-21, 12-21.
In the women’s doubles, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah advanced to the quarter-finals with a dominant straight-sets win over Thailand’s Phatcharaporn Chaiwan and Nannapas Kraisura, 21-14, 21-10. They will now face China’s Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian.
Earlier, the Chinese pair defeated another Malaysian duo, Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing, with a 21-6, 21-13 victory in 36 minutes.
In the mixed doubles, Loo Bing Kun and Ee Wei’s strong momentum halted as they were edged out by the Taiwanese pair Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Chan in a tight three-setter, scoring 21-19, 18-21, 20-22.
Meanwhile, Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien exited the tournament after a straight-sets defeat to the Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, 14-21, 9-21.
