Men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik lifted the Singapore Open title after defeating South Koreans Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 on Sunday (June 1) in the final that lasted for 65 minutes.
There were anxious moments in the decider as both pairs were locked horns towards the end but the Malaysians showed quality to pull away for the win.
It was the world No. 3’s third title this year following wins at the Asian Championships (April) and Thailand Open (May). They also reached the final at the Malaysian Masters last week but lost to compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.
Aaron thanked the fans.
“We were physically tired after playing in back-to-back tournaments but we were mentally ready to face our opponents. It was a tough match but we persevered,” said Aaron.
“This win is not only for us but for all our fans.”
Wooi Yik said their trust in each other also played a key role.
“Our trust in each other and the match preparation made the difference in our game. It was close in the decider but Aaron calmed me down. We wanted a victory but fortunately, we didn’t rush into it.
“We were focused and I’m glad we did it,” added Wooi Yik.
