The Malaysians handled the pressure in front of a partisan French crowd, edging ahead at 19–18 in the opening game before sealing it. In the second set, they maintained momentum to close it out in style. The win improved their head-to-head record to 4-2 against the French duo and avenged their previous semi-final loss at the India Open earlier this year.
The victory sends Chen/Toh into their first-ever World Championships final and marks Malaysia’s best mixed doubles result in history, surpassing the 2006 bronze by Koo Kien Keat and Wong Pei Tty.
They will next face China’s second seeds Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xin, who earlier staged a thrilling comeback against compatriots Guo Xin Wa/Chen Fang Hui: 11-21, 23-21, 21-18.
Pearly Tan/Thinaah Also Punch Final Ticket in Women’s Doubles
Just one match before Chen/Toh’s victory in mixed doubles, Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan delivered another proud moment by becoming the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to reach a World Championships final.
Ranked No. 2 in the world, Pearly/Thinaah battled past Japan’s third seeds Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida in a tough 67-minute clash, winning 14-21, 21-13, 21-12.
After dropping the first set, the Malaysians regained control with consistent defense and aggressive net play. A 7–0 scoring streak in the decider sealed the victory and extended their dominance over the Japanese pair to 3 wins in their last 4 encounters.
They will face top seeds Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning of China in the final.
