Mülheim: Badminton World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen made a triumphant return to competition, overcoming a tough challenge from Japan’s Riku Hatano in the first round of the 2025 German Open. This was Axelsen’s first match since his India Open victory in January, and while he showed signs of dominance, he had to shake off some rust before securing a 2-1 victory.

First Set: Hatano stunned Axelsen by coming back from 15-18 down to snatch the set 22-20. Second Set: Axelsen regained control after a tight 15-15 battle, pulling away to win 21-16. Third Set: The Danish star completely dominated, racing to a 9-2 lead before sealing the match 21-9.
Despite a shaky start, Axelsen’s experience and precision proved too much, as he now advances to the second round of the Super 300 tournament.

Denmark had a strong showing in the opening rounds, with several players advancing:
Rasmus Gemke edged out fellow Dane Mads Christophersen in a thriller, winning 21-19 in the third set. Mia Blichfeldt, Amalie Schulz, and Line Christophersen all progressed in the women’s singles draw.
Malaysian Players Advance as Well
Justin Hoh and Cheam June Wei both secured second-round spots for Malaysia:
Justin Hoh battled past Takuma Obayashi (Japan) 21-19, 19-21, 21-19 and will now face Jason Teh Jia Heng (Singapore). Cheam June Wei overcame Su Li Yang (Taiwan) 23-21, 21-13, setting up a tough clash against second seed Loh Kean Yew (Singapore).

The German Open is a Super 300 tournament, making it one of the smaller stops on the Badminton World Tour, but an important preparation event for top players heading into major championships.
