Jakarta: Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan are one win away from making history after staging a brilliant comeback to secure a place in the women’s doubles final at the 2025 Indonesia Open.
Their journey to the championship match won’t be easy, as they are set to face world No.1 Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China—a formidable duo known for their consistency and precision.
In today’s electrifying semifinal at Istora Senayan, Pearly-Thinaah bounced back from a sluggish start to defeat Li Yi Jing and Luo Xu Min 12-21, 21-17, 21-11 in just under an hour. It marks their third final appearance this season, following strong performances at the Indonesia Masters and Thailand Open.
Watch Highlights:
“We reminded each other to stay calm, be patient, and enjoy the game,” said Pearly. “That mindset helped us fight back today.”
If they win the final, Pearly-Thinaah will become the first Malaysian women’s pair to win the Indonesia Open since Chin Ee Hui and Wong Pei Tty in 2009—and will take home a prize of USD 107,300.
Other Key Highlights from the Semifinals:
-
Chen Tang Jie & Toh Ee Wei fell short in their mixed doubles semifinal after a shaky performance against Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, losing 23-21, 15-21, 11-21. The Malaysian pair cited unforced errors and mental lapses during crucial points.
-
Man Wei Chong & Tee Kai Wun’s bid to return to the Indonesia Open final was denied after losing a gritty three-game battle to Indonesian duo Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi. Despite a valiant effort, the Malaysians were edged out 18-21, 21-12, 18-21.
-
In a notable coaching duel, former Indonesian great Hendra Setiawan, now coaching Sabar-Moh Reza, outmaneuvered his former mentor Herry Iman Pierngadi, who currently leads Malaysia’s men’s doubles team.
