Taipei: Malaysian men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong is still searching for his best form but showed promising signs at the Taipei Open 2025, even though he bowed out in the first round.

Facing local player Wong Po Wei at the Taipei Arena, Ng Tze Yong battled hard over three sets before narrowly losing 21-18, 18-21, 17-21 in a grueling 1-hour-27-minute match.

This marks his second tournament back after a year-long recovery from a serious back injury. The result mirrors his earlier first-round exit at the Asian Badminton Championships last month, where he fell to Thailand’s world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

Despite the defeats, Ng Tze Yong’s increasingly aggressive playstyle suggests he’s on the right track toward regaining top form — though he clearly has more “homework” to complete before fully returning to his peak.

Aidil Sholeh Powers On, Malaysian Pairs Shine

Meanwhile, Malaysian professional shuttler Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin booked his spot in the second round after overcoming young compatriot Tan Jia Jie 21-13, 11-21, 21-8. Aidil now faces a much tougher challenge against local superstar Chou Tien Chen in the battle for a quarterfinal place.

Malaysia’s mixed doubles duo Loo Bing Kun/Toh Ee Wei also progressed smoothly, defeating Vietnam’s Pham Van Hai/Than Van Anh 21-14, 21-10 to set up a next-round clash against Korea’s Ki Dong Ju/Jeong Na Eun.

In women’s doubles, Ong Xin Yee/Carmen Ting advanced after a tight win over Taiwan’s Chung Chia En/Huang Tzu Ling, sealing victory 21-19, 21-19. They now gear up for a high-stakes match against Indonesia’s Meilysa Trias Puspitasari/Rachel Allessya Rose for a coveted quarterfinal berth.
