Ben Lane and Sean Vendy fought a fierce battle but were ultimately unable to reach the final four at the European Championships.
It could not have been closer if they tried, as the British duo fell 23-21 20-22 22-20 to in-form Eloi Adam and Leo Rossi of France.
With echoes of their 21-19 21-18 victory over the same pair at last year’s event, it was a difficult hand to be dealt for the English pair who fought valiantly in Denmark.
Lane and Vendy saw off Czechia’s Jiri and Ondrej Kral 21-19 21-8 to reach the quarter-final stage, having had a bye into the round of 16.
However, they were unable to progress to the last four after a enthralling battle with the eighth seeds, who eventually emerged victorious after 74 minutes on court.
Callum Hemming and Ethan Van Leeuwen also made it to the last eight after producing two solid performances in the previous rounds.
The duo eased past Swiss pairing Yann Orteu and Minh Quang Pham 21-14 21-10 in the round of 32 before demonstrating all their battling qualities to impressively edge past the seventh seed Grimley brothers, Christopher and Matthew, 21-19 21-19 in the last 16.
However, their run came to an end at the hands of France’s Christo and Toma Junior Popov after 55 minutes on court.
Having lost the first game 21-14, Hemming and Van Leeuwen responded in clinical fashion, taking the second game 21-17, but were unable to win the decider, going down 21-14 in the third.
Ethan Rose also earned a quarter-final berth in the men’s singles, before defeat to fourth seed Toma Junior Popov.
The 22-year-old came from behind in both the round of 64 and round 16 to reach the final eight but was unable to overcome Popov, falling 21-9 21-8.
In three tense games, Rose overcame Jan Louda, Callum Smith and Giovanni Toti in earlier rounds.
Elsewhere in the men’s singles, Harry Huang put together two incredible performances to reach the round of 16 before losing out to third seed Alex Lanier of France.
Mixed doubles pairing Callum Hemming and Estelle Van Leeuwen soared into the quarter-finals with two dominant wins but faced second seeds and home favourites Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund of Denmark in the final eight.
Despite a strong battle, the duo saw their European championships run end 21-17 21-18 at the hands of the home favourites.
